High Waisted Flowy Shorts

Who’s ready for that total eclipse today?! I’ll be out on the roads all day and have not gotten my hands on any of those special viewing glasses we’re all supposed to be wearing. Eek! My plan is to just try to keep my head down and pray I end the day with my vision still fully in tact. Ha! I’m trying not to stress too much over it. My kiddos are covered at school with what they need, so that’s one less thing I have to worry about.

Speaking of stress, life feels super hectic right now in our house….like things could go off the rails at any minute. Are you in that kind of season right now? Today, I thought I’d share a few things that help me work though stressful, busy weeks. Hopefully, you find them useful for your own life too.

1. Exercise (shocker, I know)

Wait, don’t leave! Ha! I know for lots of us, hitting the gym isn’t high up on the priority list, especially during hectic weeks, but I truly, truly believe regular workouts are so beneficial to taking your mind off your troubles for a bit in your day. And I find that the after effects of getting your heart rate up with exercise, keeps your mind in that positive, upbeat place. I’ve been doing regular workouts with the same group of ladies for 3+ years now and it’s always uplifting to be with them. We cheer each other on during workouts and provide support about life in general after we’re done. Love my group of ladies! (Mauri, if you’re reading this, you are my hero, friend! I so appreciate your friendship!)

2. Ease up on the caffeine

Easier said than done, right? Trust me, I hear you loud and clear. I was never a coffee drinker until the past year or so and now it’s become an instinct to stop for it each day. I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve kinda bought into the lie that I can’t be productive in my day until I have that first cup of cold brew. But, the thing is, it’s not only affecting my wallet, it also stimulates my nervous system when I drink too much of it. And for a gal that takes blood pressure medication thanks to my genetics and deals with anxiety from time to time, that’s not great news.

So, what do we substitute is the question? For me, I start most of my mornings with a scoop of these BCAA’s added to some LaCroix. I put it in my large thermal cup and sip on it all day long, but especially first thing in the am.

Another option might be switching over to some herbal teas like this one with zero caffeine from everyone’s favorite go-to coffee spot.

Even if you can just reduce the amount of caffeine you take in on a regular basis, that will move you toward your goal of reducing those internal biological stress triggers.

3. Unplug and go for a walk…SOLO!

Ahhh…..can I just tell you how much I enjoy my nightly walks? I stopped for a couple of months and I’m so happy to be making them part of my regular routine again. There is just something about going for a walk outside listening to nature that makes me feel closest to God. That’s really become my prayer and reflection time. It’s kind of a one-two-punch scenario. Great not only for the body, but also the soul.

It’s because of this that I honestly just don’t love having a walking buddy. A shopping buddy? Heck, yes! But walking…..that’s my time to reconnect and recharge. I strongly urge you to give it a try for a week or so and see how it works for you.

4. Prioritize your zz’s

While I always knew that getting enough sleep was important, I didn’t really make it a major priority in my life until earlier this spring when I began implementing a new fitness/nutrition lifestyle. Lack of sleep can mess up all kinds of stuff, you guys. It’s wild. We already know it can affect our moods, right? But it can also contribute to carb over-eating and other poor food choices. It can also negatively affect our immune system and cortisol levels. These all spell trouble for dealing with daily stress.

Now, if you’re like me and need a little fun game to make it a priority, a friend of mine recently introduced me to the Sleep Cycle app. I love it! Just before you go to sleep, you turn it on and it listens to you via your phone microphone and tracks your sleep patterns, the quality of your sleep, how many minutes you snore (Yep!) and how many hours you’re getting each night. Is it super nerdy that I enjoy waking up each morning to check my nightly stats?!  Haa!

Anyway, whatever works for you to get you to preserve and protect your sleep each night, definitely begin thinking and implementing your plan. Your body and mind will thank you every morning with clear thoughts and energy to tackle whatever life throws at you that day.

5. Give it to Jesus

This really should get moved up to the number one spot because casting your daily cares on God and continuously seeking His guidance with whatever is going on in your day is definitely going to be your best course of action. God did not promise us that this life would not have troubles and trials to face, but He did promise that He would always see us through them if we would just trust in Him and His ways.

Seek Him, friends.

When you’re about to blow your top because your day isn’t going as planned or when your to-do list feels completely overwhelming, seek Him. He longs for us to reach out to Him and ask for His help. He actually delights in it. So amazing, right?

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ~ Jeremiah 29:13
