Summer is nearing the end and it’s always about this same time every year that I start to think about all the things that were on my summer to-do list, but haven’t made happen quite yet. Good news is that there is still a little bit of time left to get in a few of my top activities before the leaves start falling.

Here are 5 things I’d still like to TRY to squeeze in this summer!

.

1. Make an event of going out for ice cream

While I’ve taken our boys to get ice cream several times the past couple of months here in Baton Rouge, I’d like to use it as an excuse to take a little drive over to New Orleans for the day. I’d love to head over to The Creole Creamery in Uptown on a Saturday to test out the flavors and enjoy an extra scoop of that local NOLA charm.

2. Throw a low pressure, informal BBQ

Life is pretty hectic right now with Pete rehearsing every night for his upcoming show, but I’d still love to find a few hours to have some friends and family over to grill out. Not much cooking happens at our house during the summer and quite frankly, I’m missing a home cooked meal. Ha!

3. Take an evening riverboat ride

Even though I was born and raised in New Orleans, I still have yet to take a Mississippi River Dinner Jazz Cruise on the Creole Queen and I’d like to remedy that as soon as possible. Not sure I could handle another 5 day cruise any time soon, but a 3 hour trip down the Mississippi River with food, dancing and the live sounds of jazz sound pretty sweet to me, since I have always like boats, and I even visit the Newport Beach Boat Parade sometimes to enjoy the boating life out there.  Sure, there are things that your boat actually needs. There are things like sails, line, sail covers, and cushions. Then, of course, there are the things that no one really needs, but life can be a whole lot more fun with them than without them. These boating accessories are part of what makes the experience so much fun, and what can define your rig as a class unto itself, and its owner someone who is fastidious about the smallest of details. One of the main reasons people buy boats (other than the enjoyable act of sailing itself) is to go fishing in the best spots that land doesn’t offer access to. For this reason, many people think fishing gear is among the most necessary and immediate of boat accessories, and the level of customization available for fishing gear is incredibly high. You can get custom made rods, reels, line of different strength and materials, and of course, there are the options available for bait, lures, weights, and other gear. Beyond that, there are also hundreds of ways you can display, mount, and store the rods in your boat using various boating accessories. It all depends on what you want; there are options for functionality or options for ostentatious display (if you’re going to buy it, you might as well be proud of it). Whatever your desire, there are enough boating accessories on offer that you can buy all the fishing gear you want and proudly display it. You can go on Merritt Supply homepage to take the details about marine products.

Don’t forget that often the best boating accessories for a boat of any kind (whether it’s a speed boat or a sail boat or a cross between the two) are other boats! For larger boats, you won’t be able to pull them into a dock slip (instead you’ll have to tie on to a mooring) so you’ll need a dinghy to make shorter trips between your boat and the shore. Beyond necessity, if you’re really looking for a recreational vehicle, you’ll need other boats for entertainment. Whether these extra water vehicles are kayaks that you can tie on to the sides of the boat and launch when you need them, or jet skis that are motorized and require refueling; they add to the boating fun.

Also, never neglect the overall flare of your boat. Owners should pay special attention to the paint of the boat, the color and sheen, and take a care to maintain that carefully because the salt air can be very corrosive. The water and resulting dampness can often cause bacteria or algae to grow alongside the boat. All of this creates a look of an unsightly, unkempt boat, so take pride in your vessel! Keep it clean and shiny with fresh paint yearly and rigorous cleaning. Sometimes the best boating accessories are the ones that keep your boat sparkling and beautiful.

Some important boating accessories are also communication tools. Make sure that before you go out on the water you have a functional short wave radio in addition to a satellite phone for safety purposes. Many times if you’re going far off shore into deeper waters, cell phone signals don’t carry and other ships might not be in range of you. Have a little fun with it too! You can set your boat up with a very decent, water proof sound system that allows your tunes to be heard throughout the boat in surround sound without ever worrying if the salt air will blow out your electronics.

4. Tackle a good fiction book

I go through phases with reading. How about you? I’ll read books back to back for a while and then stop for six months. I read this historical fiction novel this summer and I’m finishing up this Nicolas Sparks lighter read right now. I’d like to sneak in this one though before the next month is over. Books set back in earlier times are some of my favorites.

Here are a few that have great reviews that fit the bill:

5. Do dinner on the rooftop overlooking the Mississippi River

Unfortunately, Pete does not eat much international cuisine, so this one may have to be a girl’s night out situation. My dad got me into eating sushi over the summer and it’s now become a regular thing for me. I’d love to hang out with friends on the rooftop of Tsunami here in downtown Baton Rouge and spend a couple of relaxing hours overlooking the Mississippi River. My local ladies, where you at?! Let’s make it happen!
