How’s the weather where you are? Does it still feel like fall or have you gone straight to winter already? If you’ve still got some nice weather still happening, I’ve got a fun way for you to enjoy the season.

Several weeks back, my friend (and photographer) Katie and I had a fun little semi-french style picnic in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon…and it was a ton of fun! We honestly could not have ordered any better weather to hang out at the park near the Baton Rouge capital and have us a little wine and cheese! The only mishap we encountered was the rather frightening flock of hissing ducks interested in our bread sticks. Ha! But in all honestly, it only added to the fun of it all so if it happens to you, just roll with it!

I thought it might be fun to share a few quick tips for throwing together a little fall cheese board picnic of your own. I was a little worried about having enough variety, but I quickly learned that you really don’t need a whole lot to make it happen. Good company and some fruit and cheese are the only “have to have” ingredients. But just for the sake of pretty pictures (ha!), here are a few things that work great for a fall picnic.

Five Simple Elements For a Cheese Board Style Picnic

1.  Pick out one to three types of fruit. Even if it’s just a couple pears, a few strawberries and a couple handfuls of grapes, that’s really all you need for a small picnic for two. Keep it simple. Dried apricots are a another great option.

2.  Pick out a small wedge or two of both a semi soft and a little firmer cheese. The two we had here were of a subtle blue cheese variety, I believe. I like a mild, semi-soft cheese, personally, but Katie liked the stronger, firmer cheese wedge best. This is another great reason to get a couple different ones if you can…everyone likes a little variety, right?

3.  Choose a prosciutto or a Genoa salami if you like. I’m a bit of a meat eater, so I picked up both to see which one I liked best. Turns out I loved each of them in different combinations. My favorite combination was a rosemary cracker topped with a small sliver of pear, prosciutto and the softer cheese. SO yummy!

Side note: If you’re not a meat eater, consider adding in some olives or salted almonds to give you that salty aspect to balance out the flavors.

4.  As far as I’m concerned, cheese is just no bueno without a good carb to go with it. Pick out a few crackers, breadsticks or melba toast options to layer that yummy cheese and prosciutto on and go to town!

5.  Lastly, grab something to drink…whether that be a bottle of wine or some sparkling juice if wine is not your thing. Or even better and if you have a little extra time, why not make a batch of the homemade apple cider that I shared a week or so ago in this post! Would be so good on a cool, crisp day!

That’s it! That’s all you truly need for a fun little french inspired picnic this fall season, friends.

If you still have warm enough weather for it, I really encourage you to get out in nature, throw open a blanket and just enjoy a few laughs in the company of good friends over some yummy food. It’s such a feel-good experience!

I adore a good picnic get-together with friends! You have such great tips here. Whenever I bring the cheese I have to remember a knife, or else problems ensue, LOL. That pears and cheese gift box looks so pretty…totally giving me Christmas gift ideas.
